While a copyright is created as soon as the creator has affixed the work in a tangible form of expression such as a book, sound recording or video, it is a myth that this is all that is necessary to enforce this right.  And don't be fooled by the so called "Poor Man's Copyright", which consists of mailing yourself a copy of your work. US copyright law does not recognize this as legal way to enforce your copyrights.
